Hi fellow writer!
I’ve got another opportunity for you.
I’m currently a development contractor at Women AdvaNCe, a nonprofit in North Carolina that serves as a megaphone for women, marginalized communities, and their rights.
You may remember my work with them when I was a consultant during Pride Month or Women’s History Month in previous years, when I commissioned and edited articles.
We’re in a rebuilding stage and currently can’t pay writers (we will ASAP!), which I know is disappointing. I really care about this organization though, and I want to help new writers who need more bylines and experience, so hear me out.
Here’s what we ask you to do for us:
Join the Writer’s Collective. Basically, a go-to group of writers for Women AdvaNCe. Occasionally, we’ll host meetings and time for folks to co-write if they’d like.
Write about women and marginalized communities, and how that ties to NC in some way, for us. We’re thinking about an article a month, with a minimum of 700 words.
The content we publish…
Tells the stories of different groups organizing around issues related to the welfare of women and families in North Carolina
Explains proposed and enacted policies and initiatives that impact women and families in North Carolina and their measured and/or projected impact
Publicizes events educating about or advocating for policies and initiatives that improve the lives of women and their families
Contains original interviews with women’s rights leaders and organizers
Informs the public about current events and injustices impacting women and their families through local reporting
Here’s what we can do for you (beyond the byline):
Offer a Slack community with other established writers (like me, but also others!) who can offer writing advice and support
Provide thoughtful edits to help you advance your writing skills
Provide trainings/workshops re: writing and freelancing over video
*I want to note here that these resources/tips often cost money through my personal resources page, but if you write for WA, you get them for free until we’re able to pay writers!*
Interested or have questions? Email ashley@womenadvancenc.org & I’ll add you to the Slack group where you’ll get more information.
We look forward to having you!
Ashley
