Hi!

Lately (and all the time, really) I see lots of tweets from writers about applications or pitches getting rejected.

While I wish we could all get acceptances more often, I’ll admit this: It’s nice to know we’re not alone in getting rejected, you know? Rejection and “failure” can feel so isolating, but they’re not.

So, here are some meaningful tweets on the subject in case you’re feeling down:

Something I really want newer writers to know is how normal rejection is in this field. I probably got 200 rejection emails before my first pitch was accepted. I still get ideas rejected like once a week, sometimes by editors who know & like my work! Just be proud you're trying.

That's even how I got my job. At least half of what I pitched to ASK was rejected, but I continued to pitch and worked extra hard when I got a "yes." And one day, they asked if I'd become a contributing editor! So keep striving, and don't take rejection personally. ❤️

Besides the fact you’re far from alone, I think this is another great reminder:

Stop seeing yourself as the villain when things go wrong. Be okay with not knowing why you got rejected, overlooked, bad things happening etc. You’re not always the problem & don’t allow your mind/others to deceive you! Life happens, and that’s okay. It’s not always your fault.

And peep this silver lining I experienced (twice!):

I pitched a story to a publication that pays $50, and it was rejected. Then I pitched it again to a different publication, and now I'm getting $300 for it. Rejection can be a good thing!

Rejection happens to all of us, no matter how successful or talented we are, and no matter how many bylines we have. And sometimes, there’s no silver lining—the situation just sucks! But remember this: You’ll have success in time. Don’t quit <3
