Inspired by a blurb in Sonia Weiser’s newsletter, I wanted to share some ways you can build your business when you aren’t getting assignments / work is slow / you’re starting out / etc.

• Work on your portfolio/website — update it, make it look pretty, ensure your best and most recent articles are there

• Join Medium’s Partner Program and write on Medium

• Work on your taxes for the next year — list write-offs, find an accountant, etc

• Take a writing course on LinkedIn

• Study writers you look up to — what topics do they write about, and for which publications? Do they offer coaching services?

• Take a break! Business won’t always be slow, so appreciate this time

• Get life things done — oil changes, appointments, laundry, that kind of thing

• Find editors to follow on Twitter

• Read articles with writing tips/resources

• Update your resume
